The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, or DOT, releases a yearly report of Crash Facts and Statistics. The 2018 report has recently been made available, and it shows the losses that car accidents cause for Pennsylvania drivers.
In 2018, there were 128,420 reportable traffic crashes in Pennsylvania. Of those, 78,219 people were injured in these crashes, and 1,190 were killed. On average, this amounts to 15 crashes an hour, nine injuries an hour, and one fatality every seven hours.
Accident Data for Monroe County
The DOT’s report gives us even greater insight into car accidents by breaking down collision data by the county. Monroe County, which sits in the Poconos region and includes the city of Stroudsburg, is a popular place for residents and tourists alike. Monroe County is average in size and population, with 169,507 residents, which accounts for roughly 1.3 percent of the state’s population. Car accident numbers for the county are pretty much what would be expected given the number of people in the area.
During 2018, the DOT reports that Monroe County had 2,461 reportable crashes. This amounts to 1.9 percent of the state’s total yearly crashes, which is just slightly higher than we may expect based on the population. Of these total accidents, 1,044 involved injuries, and 18 resulted in fatalities.
Monroe County Accidents Over the Past Five Years
Looking at Monroe County’s accident data over the past five years, the number of car crashes has remained fairly consistent. The five-year low of Monroe County car crashes was recorded in 2014, when there were 2,163 accidents. In 2015, the number of crashes increased to 2,504. Since then, the number of yearly accidents has not seen any significant changes. Reported accidents for the county were 2,621 in 2016, 2,456 in 2017, and 2,461 in 2018.
The number of traffic fatalities in Monroe County has also remained fairly stable over the last five years, with the exception of a notable increase in traffic fatalities in 2015. The county reported 23 fatalities in 2014, 34 in 2015, 29 in 2016, 18 in 2017, and 21 in 2018.
Given the fairly steady accident data over the past five years, it would be safe to say that we can expect accident numbers for Monroe County to be fairly consistent when the DOT’s 2019 car crash report is released.
