For years, they’ve helped accident victims in the Scranton, Stroudsburg, and Wilkes-Barre, PA, area seek damages from negligent drivers and other parties. As the year winds down, we want to consider the potential for car accidents in Wilkes-Barre. Our focus will expand to include all of Luzerne County. Our lawyers will also speculate on what 2020 car accident numbers may look like given the way the COVID-19 pandemic has changed daily life and routine.

Luzerne County Accident Statistics

According to numbers from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were 3,418 crashes in Luzerne County in 2019. Of these collisions, there were 30 fatal auto accidents, 1,487 injury accidents, and 1,901 collisions that involved property damage only. Luzerne County accounted for 3 percent of Pennsylvania’s total fatal crashes that year.

Overall Accident Trends in Luzerne County

Comparing 2019 numbers to previous years, there was a downward trend in overall collision numbers. From 2015-2018, there were more than 3,600 collisions in the county each year. This lower number of crashes in the county coincides with a statewide downward trend in collision numbers for 2019.

Fatal Collision Trends in Luzerne County

While total crash numbers in Luzerne County were down for the year, the fatal crash trend is slightly up, and the highest number since 2016. This coincides with the 10 drunk driving fatalities in the county in 2019. While higher than previous years, there were 18 drunk driving fatalities recorded in 2015.

How Crash Numbers May Be Different in 2020

The pandemic has changed many people’s lives this year. People may be out of work, or they may be fortunate enough to work from home. That means fewer commuters, and lower likelihood of collisions. With restaurants, bars, clubs, and music venues shuttered or operating at lower capacity, there is less traffic at nights, and possibly fewer people drinking and driving.

Yet there are many people doing road trips to avoid air travel during the holidays. Many people in Pennsylvania are making getaways to the Poconos to be away from the crowd. The risk of collisions remains present, which is why we should always drive responsibly and exercise caution behind the wheel.
